Read Three Stories for Free
I currently have up, or I am posting three different stories for you to read free of charge. These stories are on Patreon, Substack and Ream Stories free of charge, so use whichever you prefer.
The first story, I Took a Walk, is up all three places in its entirety. It is a short novella bordering on a short story. I broke it into twelve short episodes and originally published it a few years back on the now defunct Kindle Vella. Those episodes are now on all three platforms. It is the story of a man using a prototype suit to pass through walls for some corporate spying, getting lost inside a mountain side.
The next is Kara Discovered. It is a longer work that I was in the process of putting up on Kindle Vella when it closed. It is also broken up into short serial episodes. As I am revising those episodes before putting them up, only a few of those are up but more come every week. I Drafted Kara Discovered years ago, then abandoned it after 4 rewrites, and used it as the world building for a book placed 3000 years after it, Renegade on Kara. While putting that one up on Kindle Vella, I started breaking that first one I wrote in that universe into very short serial episodes.
Kara is a universe that another race artificially created impossibly long ago, to enhance their minor psychic power to the point of being magic. But doing that made modern technology, theirs or anyone else, nonfunctional there. Not knowing that magic exists there, Lieutenant Jeffries had to take men that are very handicapped by the condition there, in to explore it on foot.
The third is A Fall of Ashes, a very dark fantasy. I wrote a draft for a story of a girl clawing her way to the top of the evil pecking order. Then I went back to before that story started and wrote two novellas on what put her on the path to being an evil sorceress. The first is A Fall of Ashes. I published its chapters on kindle Vella and its entirety as an eBook. That version had several problems with it. I am fixing those chapters and republishing them for free on the serial platforms. Unlike the other two free ones, it is published in full chapters, not short episodes.
Ashes is born into a society where women are either wives or slaves for the most part. Flirting to get a husband, she gets betrayed into becoming a slave. Trying to escape that fate, she ends up on the doorstep of an old witch. As she has mage talent, that witch agrees to keep her from being a tavern slave and to teach her magic. Ashes puts on a cursed ring with a demon in it. She must overcome challenges after challenges, but her biggest is her own self-image and tendency to do no more than needed. Those make her far to easy to exploit.
